Lyrics

Feel the whiskey coursing through me
See you sitting there lying to me
Makes me wonder why I still believe a word you say
Watch the barroom slowly spinning
No excuses, looks like you’re winning
I’m the one who’s lost. I never should have come this way

I was just a Yankee rover
Cruising west on a four-leaf clover
Think about the way we met
We thought the heat would stay
Heading down this endless alley
Disappointment is all we tally
Such a waste of time. I never should have come this way

I remember when it all was soft and warm
Every word a song in harmonies that carried us along

Instrumental verse

All the changes that became the life we lead
I’m not just blaming you. A tragedy like this made by two

Here we sit, the bar is closing
One is lying and one is posing
Slouching past the midnight toll to stain another day
Could we ever break this habit?
Birthing problems like some sad rabbit
Time to turn and run. I never should have come this way
Chase the rising sun. I never should have come this way

I really appreciate the professionalism you bring to your songs. They sound complete, Your vocal is a wonderful complement to the finely constructed and performed music. Very nice, all around.

This has an assurance and polish that made me want to go wherever you were leading. The jazzy guitar is so smooth, the vocal performance so comfortable and reflective of a life long-lived; it all amounts to a very effective reminiscence on all that has come before.

This has a Chris Isaac vibe, especially the haunting guitars. Good song with a melancholic air but also a pragmatic mind set.

Another winner! Clever lyrics! Also, love your chord progressions/note changes. Intriguing! Noticed it in “Staying Awhile.”

WOW, this is a sensational ballad! I love the restrained arrangement and production. It complements your vocals so well. Your poetry in lyricism is astonishing too, you make rhyme schemes seem so easy! I love the “I remember when it was all soft and warm” bridge. Great peek of the sun through the clouds before the shadows whisking it away again.
