ROLLIN'

by @edwardsmusic

Liner Notes

Not a new piece (the piece actually dates back to November 2019, with additional touch-ups being done in 2020 and 2023), but it is one that has never been submitted to FAWM or 50/90 before.

I started this piece for National Solo Album Month (NaSoAlMo) 2019. Initially the track clocked in at 23:50 and I used another song that was 5:19 to make an album that was 29:09 in length. Then in 2020 I added some additional parts to extend the piece.

The most recent work I did (circa October 2023) was change the drum sound from Mixcraft's "Heavy Metal Kit" to the MT-PowerDrumKit VST sound.

The piece is largely instrumental, with spoken vocals at the beginning and near the end by myself and some of my uni mates at the time. The audio voice clips were mp3 files converted to MIDI, so it sounds like a cat running over a piano roll.

The piano, percussion and organ were recorded via MIDI. The bass and guitar were recorded on my Steinberg audio interface.

The drum beat was a rock groove from Jim Dooley which I recreated by ear using MIDI.

I also added a coda at 29:12 consisting of speaker feedback being made in the studio at the UpBeat Music Program in Sunshine (Visy Cares Hub). The feedback was recorded in February 2019 for the intro of my FAWM track "FAWM is a Ghost Town!"

At exactly 30 minutes, this is the longest track I have ever released.

Edward Roussac - keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar, synthesisers, drum programming, spoken vocals
James Menzies, Josiah Coutts, Brandon Young, Jacob Munnery - spoken vocals, sound effects
Justen Petch - speaker feedback

A stage show in and of itself! Like a rock opera-jazzy-like mix playing out on the stage its particular merged sounds and orchestration bounce and intertwine with originality and style--all the while catching and keeping one's ear to listen.

Fab contagious rhythm in this mix! Great, appropriate "Rollin'" title matches the pieces funky, rock-infused, telling play and story. Dug the limited vocals and sounds like whistles and horns peppered in and those deliberate, ever-so-slight music pauses building to crescendo--unique and not unlike a Pink Floyd-ish tune experience.

Can definitely see why you revisited this cool extended instrumental--at 30 minutes, it's the longest I've heard during any FAWM or 50/90 of which I've taken part--and felt it proper to post. It's music truly fits with the platform here and is quite the gem to behold and hear!
