Challenge: Two Styles

Liner Notes

#acousticrock #singersongwriter
“Babblecore” is an imagined musical style in which the meaning of words is not so important. If anyone has heard of this word as a musical term, feel free to let me know. There was no babble in the song as I originally wrote it, so I put in the “ba” syllables as a nod to this idea.
In early drafts, the song was called “Curtain Call.” That fit, but once I settled on a rhyme for “babblecore,” it seemed like a stronger way to express the core idea in the song.
In the lyrics, this is the more extraverted one trying to get the more quiet one to talk more, basically begging for communication while trying not to be too undignified about it. This is apparently a very common pattern when a couple consists of anxious and avoidant attachment styles.
For the Two Styles challenge I wrote the folky verses and hard rock stylings in the chorus. If the transition doesn’t jump out, it’s because this particular combination has been done a million times, with rock bands and producers looking for ways to dial back the verses so they don’t upstage the choruses. The opening and chorus chords are pretty much like the ELO song “Do Ya” and many other songs.

Lyrics

Hey baby
I love the way you focus
You have an air of confidence
You’re beautiful in the silence

But when I hear your voice
It’s a sound that soothes my soul
I hear that restless spirit
It’s like a magnet when I hear it

So when you’re ready to tell me
I want to hear the latest theory
I’m ready to plumb the deepest mystery
Call encore at the soliloquy
But you know what I’m here for
I’m here for the babblecore
Ba ba babblecore
Ba ba ba babblecore

Hey baby
In truth you could say anything
You could sigh or giggle or rant
Whisper or rhyme or chant

Because when I hear your voice
It’s a sound that soothes my soul
I hear that restless spirit
It’s like a magnet when I hear it

So when you’re ready to tell me
I want to hear the latest theory
I’m ready to plumb the deepest mystery
Call encore at the soliloquy
But you know what I’m here for
I’m here for the babblecore
Ba ba babblecore
Ba ba babblecore
Ba ba ba babblecore

Babblecore
Ba ba babblecore
Ba ba babblecore
Ba ba ba babblecore
