I hope everybody had a great weekend! Here’s the latest: a co-write with Abe, one of my hosts here in Utah and my new songwriting client. It has many revisions ahead as the heat finally ebbs and our brains ooze back into our skulls, but as far as a first draft, though, I think it works!
I tried to work within Abe’s vocal range for this, so I got to stretch my vocal low end a bit. 😀
Lyrics
No doubt about it
If you want to succeed
If you want to succeed
You have to go away
Far from this place
Where lies and truth converge
If you want tomorrow
You have to give up yesterday
PreCh 1:
He burned his stories and sketches
and hedged his bets
His conviction was to disappear
Am I the only one
Offered up to insignificance
In this godforsaken room
If I’m the only one
Lonely in my own damn reticence
Whose name god sings out of tune
Find me in the foothills
West of the moon
Find me somewhere west of the moon
Halfway to Sonoma
If you want to be free
If you want to be free
You have to run?
Let fear be your companion
and find out what he eats
Sync his cadence to your heartbeat
so he never leaves
Am I the only one
Offered up to insignificance
In this godforsaken room
If I’m the only one
Lonely in my own damn reticence
Whose name god sings out of tune
Find me in the foothills
West of the moon
Find me somewhere west of the moon
The singing from the church made me afraid of life
Forgiven every morning and remembered in the night
Staring at my hands who have never seen a fight
The ringing of the church bells, the dull edge of the knife
Am I the only one
Offered up to insignificance
In this godforsaken room
Am I the only one
Offered up to insignificance
In this godforsaken room
If I’m the only one
Lonely in my own damn reticence
Whose name god sings out of tune
Find me in the foothills
West of the moon
Find me somewhere west of the moon
Find me somewhere west of the moon
The part about your name, being sung out of tune was perhaps my favorite, but there were a lot of other ones too.
Vocally, going to that end of your range with this song sounded very Ani DeFranco to me, in a fantastic way.
