Hello from Salt Lake City, everybody! I’m in town to do a couple shows this weekend, and WOW the heat here is really something!

My musical obsession of the week is the song “Distance” by OneRepublic. I’ve been so moved by it day after day that I decided I wanted to write a response song to it!

Lyrics

I know a man with a million faces
Watch him refract like prisms in the sun
I know what I said and you know what you did
And I’m fighting my instinct to run

Run, run, run
Run, run, run

But I’ve decided I’m
Sticking around, I’m staying
Can’t find the way out, let’s find a way in
Whenever you’re in doubt
Don’t turn around
Soon you’ll figure it out
Till then, I’m waiting

This ain’t the place to phrase an answer
Our voices, they echo in these canyon walls
I know that you’re hurting, you know that I’m tired
We’re walking the wire above the fall

I want to
Run, run, run
Run, run, run

But I’ve decided I’m
Sticking around, I’m staying
Can’t find the way out, let’s find a way in
Whenever you’re in doubt
Don’t turn around
Soon you’ll figure it out
Till then, I’m waiting

Orpheus, trust me
Clear the dust from your soul
Orpheus, there’s no rush
Lean into my love

‘Cause I’ve decided I’m
Sticking around, I’m staying
Can’t find the way out, let’s find a way in
Whenever you’re in doubt
Don’t turn around
Soon you’ll figure it out

I’ve decided I’m
Sticking around, I’m staying
Can’t find the way out, let’s find a way in
Whenever you’re in doubt
Don’t turn around
Soon you’ll figure it out
Till then, I’m waiting

Orpheus, trust me

Love the repeated Run, run, runs. Now I have to go listen to “Distance” to experience your inspiration for this one!

I love the 'just voice and acoustic guitar' style track, energetic and very clean playing and lovely vocals too. Definitely a catchy song as others have said and a great idea to write a response song.

I'm a sucker for mythology references. You sound great, and this is a very stick-in-your-head sort of melody. You did such a good job of writing interesting but relatable lyrics, too. Awesome storytelling!

I really felt your emotions there. It's a song that sounds like it comes from a long experience. You can start playing this is really awesome.

Wow. Not only is this catchy, but it's so very complex lyrically!

This is catchy as heck! A very hummable and singable melody.

I love your imagery, particularly in the first verse, but the layers of meaning are really something. There are hints of trauma and recovery and sorrow, all mixed in. Great voice and playing, and a one take no less!
